PUBLIC TRANSPORT INFORMATION FOR GUESTS (PDF 11kb)

Walkers and Cyclists are welcome at Beech Hill Farm to Stay in either The Coach House or The Studio as self-catering accommodation on our farm. Each unit is at the opposite end of the estate so you do not have your privacy compromised in any way. Some guests drive here with their bikes, others hire locally and the intrepid and the fit arrive on the doorstep having caught a train from Victoria to Polegate on the Eastbourne line with their bikes, cycled up the Cuckoo Trail (see www.sustrans.org.uk ) to Hellingly or North Corner near Horam and then across by the lanes to Beech Hill Farm.

Local Walks

You can see more about routes and walks on www.eastsussex.gov.uk/pathstoprosperity . There are guided walks as well as many different routes and circuits. You can build in pub lunches by walking or cycling from the door (muddy in winter!) and explore the Pevensey Levels, Cuckmere Haven and many other wonderful and varied terrains.

If you would like to combine a personal retreat or quiet week-end you could consider joining a guided walk with a difference by contacting Louise Gorst on www.solesandsouls.co.uk and discover the beauty of the South Downs near Lewes on a special Walk for Well-Being.

Comments from a recent visitor June 207

I was looking for somewhere I could afford to stay by myself that was within easy reach of London. For couples or groups of friends with cars, there are lots of options when it comes to finding self-catering accommodation out in beautiful countryside. Not so if, like me, you want a few days on your own and you don't drive. The Studio turned out to be the perfect solution.

I caught a train from London Bridge that took just over an hour to arrive at Battle; it also stops at Charing Cross and they leave every half-hour or so. There was a cab waiting at the taxi rank outside Battle station, and this cost £16 (not including tip) to get me to Beech Hill Farm. My journey door-to-door was less than 2.5 hours.

The food I had ordered from the local village shop a few days previously had been delivered to the Studio that morning so I was able to eat lunch straight away. There was plenty of space and light and a wooden floor - perfect for yoga self-practice - and I was free to sing and play my guitar without anyone bothering me or being bothered!

Everyone is friendly and helpful if you need something, but you don't feel you have to make conversation or be sociable.

Walks

I started off on the Rushlake Green Walk from The Horse and Groom and as I got about 2/3 of the way through I was scared to pass a sheep that was staring at me in a field(!)...

so I turned back and took another footpath that began a little further up the road. This brought me to the church graveyard in Old Heathfield, so I had lunch in the gorgeous garden at the Star. From there I walked on the roads to Heathfield proper so I could go to the pharmacy and the bank. After shopping I joined the Cuckoo Trail down to just past Horam and then walked along increasingly quiet roads until I reached Beestons(?) Farm from where I joined the footpaths and bridleways leading back to Cowbeech Rd, where we bumped into each other. ,

The next two days I walked to Herstmonceux Castle, whose grounds and gardens were a piece of heaven. As it was too hot for wellies, I tried to stick to the roads but if you take the long cut crossing Cricketing Lane (?) it's a lovely country walk ,at least for city people like me, with lots of beautiful views across fields! Also the approach via the bridleway which starts almost opposite Herstmonceux church is amazing. All of a sudden the castle appears and it feels like a scene out of King Arthur! Herstmonceux church and graveyard are definitely worth visiting on the way. Coming back I walked through the orchard and other footpaths that form one half of the Cowbeech Walk.

To give people an idea, my walk to Heathfield and back took about 7 hours in total, but allowing for lunch and going round in circles and shopping, so the walk itself probably takes about 5 hours. Herstmonceux is 2 hours one way on the scenic route.
